Chopping Block – 25 Walmgate
The Chopping Block can be found upstairs above The Walmgate Ale House, letting you enjoy a few drinks in the pub below before heading up and dining on delicious and authentic homemade dishes made from local produce in a tasteful and welcoming restaurant setting.
There is something for everyone to enjoy, from a light bite to a hearty comforting dish, and the Ale House itself is a great spot to relax with friends and family in a warm, friendly environment.

My Recommendations:
Guinea Fowl Breast
Served in a tarragon sauce with potatoes and greens, this succulent game bird never fails to satisfy.
Imam Bayildi (v)
In the mood for something a little different? This Turkish stuffed aubergine dish combines pomegranate, feta, pine nuts and taboulah, and is suitable for vegetarians.

Kennedy’s – 1 Little Stonegate
Kennedy’s Bar & Restaurant is a unique and top-quality York bar and restaurant located in the vicinity of York Minister. Kennedy’s aims to use local meats and vegetables to create a balanced menu of carefully prepared homemade dishes served with a touch of class.

The restaurant itself is spread across two floors and offers a variety of spaces including a rooftop sun terrace and a contemporary bar.
Kennedy’s prides itself on relaxed, friendly service catering to groups of all sizes.

My Recommendations:
Smashed Reuben Burger
Griddled salt beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut with a smoky Russian sauce make for an unusual but deliciously rich burger, served perfectly cooked skin-on fries.
Malaysian Vegetable Curry (v)
Served with jasmine rice, the Malaysian curry is fresh and tasty!

Lil’s Bar & Bistro – 5 King’s Staith
Delicious food, fantastic wine and crafted cocktails.
Boasting beautiful waterfront views of the River Ouse, Lil’s Bar & Bistro is one of the latest bistros to emerge in York, and already making a name for itself with its amazing food and outstanding service.

Lil’s Bar & Bistro serves exceptionally delicious bistro dishes as well as a brilliant Sunday roast.

My Recommendations:
Sunday Roast
The Sunday Roast is the undisputed King of pub food, and Lil’s serve one of the best. What else is there to say?
Thai Burger (v)
A vegetarian burger with a twist, featuring Oriental vegetables packed together with spring onion.

Duke of York – Kings Square
The Duke of York is located in the heart of medieval York, at the top of the historic Shambles, and packed full of history and charm, and a quintessential York pub experience.

The Duke serves fresh, locally sourced food on a menu that changes with the seasons for an authentic pub experience made with Yorkshire produce.

My Recommendations:
Chicken, wild mushroom and cider pie
Made with puff pastry and served with creamy mashed potatoes and buttered vegetables, the best chicken and mushroom pie in York!
Soy and herb cottage pie (v)
Served with mashed potatoes and a rich, dark vegetarian gravy, the Duke’s cottage pie is a superb vegetarian take on a British classic, just ask for no butter on the vegetables to make it vegan.
